IMO (E)

Eliminate A,B,C because "real estates" is plural.

D - "that" has no proper antecedent.

Are you serious about E? Here subject is not real estates but 'rising real estates'. So we need 'is' and not 'are'.

IMO A is correct answer here.

Gurpinder,
please how do you explain E:
Rising commercial real estates, a gauge that brockers use to determine the strength of the housing market, are likely to deter new homeowners from buying houses this spring.

Rising commercial real estates, A gauge...?

Not sure what you're asking. Read the updated post.

Does that clarify?

@ Gurpinder;
OA is E, and i intend asking how "Rising commercial real ESTATES"
can be equated to "A GAUGE"
If you ask me, i will say they are "measures" by which .....

Expert opinion please.

=) Then I was correct in my original post. Rising commercial real ESTATES = plural.

Your question, "Rising commercial real ESTATES" = a gauge. gauge = estimate.

Therefore, the sentence is that --> brokers use "rising commercial real estates" as an estimate to determine the strength of the housing market.

Clear?

Yes, this a common doubt that many have whether "Rising commercial real estates" be considered a phenomenon and hence be considered singular.

In other such questions I have seen it being considered as plural. May be experts can help more on this.
