Please advise 530 GMAT Score (Q35/V28)

I need to improve Math and Verbal. I am going to re-take the test in 6-7 weeks. How can I get this score at least to 650? What books should I use for the next test. I have:

1) MGMAT Books
2) OG 11

I am especially weak at CR and SC. I need to improve PS and DS also. What should my study plan be? Thanks for your help.

This is the exact same score I got when I took the GMAT Prep Test 1. I havent done Verbal yet, but I was able to improve my Quant score in one month by going through the MGMAT study guides and practicing OG questions. 2 weeks ago I took the MGMAT practice test and got a 45 on Quant and I do not have a math/engg background, so it wasnt easy for me, but MGMAT books are pretty good to learn the basic concepts/tricks.

I am myself struggling with Verbal, don't really know where to start at, so cant really advise you on that piece.

Hi,

I am in a similar situation w.r.t Verbal. I am ok in CR but SC is my weakness. I am looking at Grockit or e-GMAT. Any feedback on either one could be helpful.

Grockit is excellent but eGMAT seems to have some good reviews as well. Both provide free trials. I have tried both and have liked them.

Thanks Mason. But I am just a little hesitant in going with a brand new company, it might have worked for some people, but how do I know it'll work for me, specially when I have MGMAT, Kaplan, etc - brands that are trusted and proven by many over the years.
On the contrary though, since it looks pretty reasonable compared to the rest, I might just give it a shot this weekend and see how I feel about it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi,

I have just completed the E-gmat Sentence Correction Course. Although a start-up company, it has come out with a very innovative and standard "Sentence Correction Process" which works well to crack a 500-level SC Question as well as a 700+ level SC Question. Like many others here on the forum, SC part of the Verbal Section has always been my witness. But after completing the E-gmat Sentence Correction Course I have actually started 'LIKING' SC questions. Somehow SC seems fun and easy now. I had actually got addicted to the E-gmat course and would end up watching the lessons at least 2-3 times because it was so much fun to learn. The lessons are highly interactive, start with the most basic concepts and build up on that. This means that the student gets a solid grasp on the subject.

I would highly recommend E-Gmat Sentence Correction Course to anyone looking to strengthen their SC skills. I guess they also offer a free trial. You could check that out to assess the quality of the course. I personally think that the course is top-notch.

Hi beatthegmatinsept,

I am taking GMAT soon.

Regarding CR, I improved my accuracy after going through CR bible. After CR bible, initially I was not quite sure about the answers. Then I tried OG10 CR questions and that has helped me a lot to improve in CR.

About SC, I have done e-GMAT course, discussed here. This course is very well designed and they have good practice questions which improved my accuracy in OG questions. I too agree with you that of strategy X has worked for somebody, it doesn't mean that it will work for another person. We all are from very different backgrounds. I suggest you to take the free trial of e-GMAT and then you can decide.

About RC, I am yet struggling with inference and tone questions. Need to find a way to deal with them.

Thanks Komal and Shilps for your input.
I will definitely give it a shot, hopefully this weekend. For CR, i started MGMAT this week since I already had the book from a friend. My accuracy rate is improving, although I still get 20% questions incorrect but that I know is cuz of lack of patience, which I need to improve on.
I'll let you know if e-gmat works for me at all or not.

Ok, I just did the free trial of e-gmat. Explanations seem clear, but it wasn't that difficult to complete, but I'm willing to give it a shot if this will improve my score. I have been getting scores ranging from 60% to 75% and I want to be consistently hitting at least 90%. SC is a tough topic to crack as it is very confusing.

Now komal, there are two SC products on the e-gmat site: SC 3-week course and Sentence Correction. Which one should I get? I did the free trial and I believe that is the SC 3-week course. If I can only choose one of the 2, that would be best as I have spent heaps on books and now that my SC score is not improving, I have already succumbed to purchasing this one.

I look forward to your opinion.

I have a similar query . currently my SC correction hit rate is decent (75-80 percent).I am in dilemma which course to pick.I have not picked my gmat date so far and have plety of time to work on any of courses .please suggest .

I think that with that level of accuracy, you really don't need to join any course.Just buy a couple of good books to strengthen your fundamentals and for practicing questions,and I think you should be able to do well.

ok I have one q here for ppl who despise SC section and are scoring in between mid 30's.

Say you get 7 out of 13 correct on verbal SC, than it would still mean that you are also getting some incorrect on CR and RC as well.If you look up the profile of people who usually get above 40 to mid 40's, you will notice that hey will get something around 5 to 7 incorrect, and that includes SC as well.

Personally I believe that if you get complete expertise on RC and CR (i.e near 99% hit rate), then the job will be much easier rather than focusing on SC alone.
