PowerPrep 690 (Q48, V35) need advice

by erjamit » Mon Jun 30, 2008 1:31 am
Hi,

My PowerPrep score yesterday was 690 (Q48, V35). I was really happy and couldn't believe. My previous scores had been in the range 540-600 (Kaplan, Princeton and PowerPrep). I was really delighted of getting this score. In Quant 12 were incorrect and in Verbal 14.

I did an analysis and need some advice on my areas of weakness and how to improve on that:-

Quant weakness

1 In Quant I committed 10 careless errors, which include mis-reading, not simplifying the expressions/equations, wrong calculations, forgot what is asked in the question :( etc.

2. DS is the problem area for me in Quant. I really get perplexed by number properties, number line, questions.
- Another, problem in DS is not viewing each option independently of the other.
- While, evaluating the options, overlooking/forgetting the question stem
- Not deducing enough from the question stem.

Verbal weakness
1 RC will top my problem area in Verbal. I got 4 RC passages and to my horror, I got each passage after every 1 or 2 questions. I really got pissed off by frequent RC passages and they were really very bad. Very verbose and difficult to understand. Frequent RC passages created a bit of frustration in me and I lost my patience during the test. I got SC/CR questions consecutively from Q 28 onwards I think.
My accuracy on RC was 60%, which is on the lower side and I eliminated the correct answer during PoE.

2 CR was ok but I committed careless mistakes by not understanding the argument properly. Accuracy 60-70%.

3 SC is bit strong but here again careless errors led to blunders. Accuracy 75%.

General Observations/Weakness

1 In Verbal I re-read the question and choices many times before I could find the correct choice. This really hurt my confidence on the test.
While doing OG/Kaplan I rarely re-read and my accuracy is > 75% normally in Verbal.

2 My behavior was vastly different when I was under test conditions and when I do practice OG or practice Qs. During PowerPrep, I was quite nervous, pressurized under ticking time, wasn't able to manage effectively.

3 Had lost my stamina and patience half-way through the verbal section. Which lead to increased careless errors and mis-readings.

Overall, the PowerPrep experience was great as I got my shattered confidence back in shape and I now have the confidence that I can also cross 750.

Pls advice. My exam date is 20-Aug.

Thanks
Amit

hi...man

I am sailing in the same boat...
2 weeks ago i gave powerprep..got 690
last week gave kaplan got...580

my gmat is on 18th july...

not sure what to work upon..

i suffer from sever stamina problem

and on top of that my exam is in afternoon slot...

so my plan is basically to relax...2 days be4 exam
i will try to sleep as much as possible....and remain fresh...for the final go

in gmat i believe peaking at right time is the key....

my aim is 700...I hope I achieve it...

I cant suggest much to you... just that...be consistent in practice...dont lose touch...

Hi !

I am also in the same boat as the two of you...

I am planning to take my GMAT in the last week of July. I took my Power Prep on 30th June and scored 680. Before this I had attempted 5 CATs from IMS. I felt that the CATs were a tad difficult and kinda buggy( there were repeated questions in the same test so if you got it wrong the first time, you stand to loose twice for the same mistake !). However, it was good for practice. The downside of the exercise has been that because of the mentioned factors and the fact that I may have not been all that well prepared, I scored between 560 and 610 on these IMS tests. I a not being able to get over that and even my present score and my current state of preparedness is not being able to inspire confidence.

Another fear that I am facing is that I feel that Power Prep tests are easier than GMAT Prep, so as soon as I will start with those(which is going to be pretty soon) my score will drop...

I don't have very much time left for my GMAT and I am really lost for direction... not sure how to take it from here on. My quant. is weaker of the two and the highest score I have achieved so far in quant. is 43, so I will keep revising that. I have a few options listed and need some serious advice...

My Options for the last 15 days before GMAT:

1. To solve the OG 11 and Official Verbal as well as Quant. workbook once more. In the mean time attempt GMAT Prep tests 3-4 times.

2. To concentrate on quant. while revising verbal side-by side. I have downloaded the Quant. sets from the internet so I could go through those(I haven't attempted them as yet). Also attempt GMAT Prep tests 3-4 times.

3. I have also downloaded the retired paper tests(ten in number). Whether I should attempt one of those every day and attempt GMAT Prep.

I am really at loss here for the lack of strategy.
Any suggestions would be welcome.
Moderators please take note...

Thanks,
Vishal

ps. I am desperate for a 700+ score and that just adds to the pressure. But the problem is that a score lower that that will just not work in my case...

Hi Guys

I am not sure if I am "experienced" enough to offer advice...
But well...here is what i have learned so far...

Focus on your weak areas

Saying Quant is weak..or Sc is weak..or CR is weak...does not help you..

You will notice that all Sections have "subsections"
Like Quant will have algebra, geometry, integers, etc..

You need to find out...which "subsections" you are weak in and focus on that..

for Verbal...check OG Verbal book....you will see a list of subsections..
Also try Kaplan...some of their strategies are good...might be helpful...
