First realize that the train travels 88 feet per second (5280/60), thus it goes 1 mile per minute.

Statement 1: The train could have taken 0 minutes (which would be less than 40 miles) or 45 minutes (which would be more than 40 miles). Insufficient.

Statement 2: If it took more than 42 minutes, the distance must have been at least 42 miles. Sufficient.
