Hi Avik,

Thanks for your post.

As an Indian with a background in computer science you are in a very competitive applicant pool. Many people with similar academic (if not professional) backgrounds are also applying to top tier schools, which makes it even more difficult to stand out and have a successful application.

Your 760 GMAT is a strong score and will help the academic section of your assessment. I can't fully assess this area without knowing which school you attended, but assuming it was a top-tier school then your academics are overall strong. Your TOEFL is right in line with top-tier schools.

I recommend focusing on any cross-functional interaction, people management, project management, and global exposure experiences in your career as these will help strengthen your candidacy.

Your extracurricular involvement as a college cricket captain will be differentiating and an excellent experience to highlight.

I recommend further researching and refining your career goals. Private equity and venture capital each require a different set of skills and experience. The more you understand what companies in those fields are looking for and how your background is an excellent fit, the stronger your application will be.

Regarding school selection, I suggest applying to a broader set of schools - consider 1-2 'top 5' schools and 2-3 'top 10/15' schools.

Please feel free to forward your resume to [email protected] for a detailed and free profile evaluation.

Best,
Heidi

Hi Heidi,

The purpose to take the various certification exams especially the CAIA Level 1 exam is to have a more intricate understanding of the mechanics within the PE domain.

I have also been speaking to a few journalists who cover the finance world and also to a few people who started their own startup company. The purpose is to understand the scope of PE and the importance of Venture Capital for startup companies.

From the list of schools that I mentioned, which are the ones that I should concentrate on? I dream of being a part of Columbia or Wharton.

Looking forward to your response.
Thanks.
