Required by law to register by the end of the year, the post office was crowded by legal aliens attempting to comply with the law before the deadline.


A) Same as question

B)Required by law to register, the post office, by the end of the year, was crowded with legal aliens who were attempting to comply with the law before the deadline.

C)Required by law to register by the end of the year, legal aliens crowded into the post office in order that they might attempt compliance with the law.

D)Legal aliens, who are required by law to register by the end of the year crowded into the post office is an attempt to comply with the law before the deadline.

E)Required by law to register, legal aliens, who were attempting to comply with the law before the deadline, crowded into the post office by the end of the year.

Assuming that there isn't a typo in D, the correct answer is E

A- misplaced modifier. legal aliens should follow the comma

B- same as A

C- "in order that they might" is just awkward and wrong

D- "is an attempt" is awkward and wrong

E- This is wordy, but the best choice.

Yes, D isn't a typo. Also, I was with E for a time being for the reasons you stated above until I saw the answer.

The answer given in this book is B :(

This question is from IMS verbal book. Unfortunately, they have given just answer but not the explanation.

You are right B seems to be that post office is required to register, but the fact is it's the legal alien.

E is the best according to me too

what is IMS ? can you please stop posting questions from source which is not recognized or does not have any explanation. It cofuses people and can misguide them. the OA seems so wrong.

how can E be the correct? I eliminated E since it changes the meaning.

The question states - "to register by the end of the year" - meaning Regisration should be before end of the year.
Answer E states - " legal aliens crowded into the post office by the end of the year" - meaning legal aliens crowded by end of the year.

any thoughts?

"to register by the end of the year" ---who are required to register by the end of the year? It's the legal alien, E clearly states the same thing

legal aliens, who were attempting to comply with the law before the deadline, crowded into the post office by the end of the year.

", who were attempting to comply with the law before the deadline" tells something about legal aliens. which can be done using comma before who.

"Required by law to register" ---who need to register? Legal aliens, who crowded.....

Its the same meaning as the original question.

D might have been right if there was a comma before "is"

needs a comma before "is" -- then it would be a complete the sentence. Since comma is not there the sentence is grammatically incorrect and has no meaning.

Correct answer is E
