focus on linear and quadratic functions

by aleph777 » Wed Jan 05, 2011 8:13 am
Hello,

This question isn't about a specific question, but rather a whole topic.

I'm basing my studies on the MGMAT guides, but I'm having trouble with the concepts of linear and quadratic functions, especially when it comes to word problems.

f(x) = mb + x
f(x) = x^2

I think the idea is that f(x) is equivalent to the x axis and the number its formula equals is equivalent to the y axis, but I'd love it if anyone could point me in the direction of some additional materials that could give me a richer (and GMAT-specific) understanding of the topics!

Thanks in advance!

f(x) = mx + b simply tells you that for every x there is a single value f(x). Mathematically, you can handle the expression the same way you would y = mx + b.

If GMAT math is a challenge for you, consider a math-specific GMAT course such as Kaplan's GMAT Math refresher. Such courses offer a more thorough grounding in the basics than do most standard courses. THey are often taken before a standard GMAT course.

Good luck,
