Doubt..!!!

by mad_scientist » Fri Jun 24, 2011 6:59 am
hi everyone..!!!

well i have a doubt on the usage of word "that", as per wren and martin, that should never be preceded by the preposition in the sentences,

for example,
customer: i think i might try the soup.
waiter: sorry sir,The soup's off.
customer: In that case, i'll try burger.

is underlined portion of the conversation between customer and waiter is correct..??

please help thanks in advance..!!!

It would be fine to use "that" here since it's referring to the specific case of the soup being "off."

The customer could reply, "In that case, I'll try a burger."

It's acceptable to use the preposition here because "In that case" is a complete Idiom.

Another similar one I can think of is "In that..." which means "For the reason that...."

It's better to go for the meaning of SC and not worry too much about what can precede specific types of words. There are bound it be exceptions.

Either would be correct. This kind of choice isn't within the scope of the GMAT. There would be another error to help you decide. :)
