How many times can GMAT Prep be re-taken?

by gmat_dest » Thu May 07, 2009 7:56 am
Hi experts,

I have given GMAT Prep1 twice (710, 750)
and GMAT Prep 2 twice (710, 770)

But I found a few repeated questions in the 2nd repeats of the Preps.

I have 3 weeks left and I plan to uninstall/re-install again.
Will I get repeats again?

Regards

Yes, you'll likely get even more repeats if you take the same tests again. As an alternative, why don't you take the free tests offered by the prep companies? The GMAT Prep tests are best, but if you're getting lots of repeat questions, the score and experience won't be accurate.

Here's a link to the Veritas test - most/all of the other companies have free tests, too.

Good luck!

Hey Jim,

How much does the Veritas prep simulate Actual GMAT?
I mean in terms of +/- points ?

cheers

Uninstalling and reinstalling doesn't change the question bin so you'll definitely see repeats! If what you are interested in is replicating the score and test experience then you can probably get away with one repeat.

However, the benefit to repeating it over and over again is that you will access many more types of questions as well as the more difficult questions. For this reason I think it is worth it to repeat the test 4, 5, and 6 times. But of course scoring a 770 on the 6th repeat does not mean you will score 770 on the real thing.

Good Luck!

Re: the Veritas test --

The free online test is pretty accurate. I'd estimate +/- 50 points. I scored 10 points lower on the Veritas test than I did on the actual GMAT, so that's pretty close.

Basically, my opinion is that you should treat any practice test as a range, not as an exact score. So, if you score 700 on GMAT Prep, you should think "I will score between 650 and 750" - not "I will score 700".

Hope this helps!

Zuleron - Do you mean that each test (GMATPrep1 / GMATPrep2) can be completed two times without seeing any repeats?

In other words, if I do: GMATPrep1, GMATPrep2, GMATPrep1, GMATPrep2 - I won't get any duplicate questions?

I'm assuming then that the two tests operate off of completely separate question banks?

Thanks.

You'll probably get a couple of repeats if you uninstall and take the GMAT Prep tests twice each. But, I like zuleron's advice above - retaking the test for additional practice questions, and not necessarily the score, is a great idea.

Yes GMAT Prep I and GMAT Prep II operate from differen question banks.

But if you repeat the GMAT PRep I you'll probably see two or three repeats in quant, a few more in verbal. A good trick is when you see a repeat, dock yourself 2 minutes if you remember the answer or 1 m inute if you don't remember the answer.

Thanks, makes sense.

Has anyone taken these tests more than two months apart? I'd imagine that would allow for a fairly authentic test experience even on the 2nd time around, as it's doubtful I'd remember any specific questions from the previous instance of taking the test.

I planned to do GMATPrep1 / GMATPrep2 in May, and then again in early August.

I took the test three months apart and you're right, with three months in between, you do so many other problems that you don't really remember (or at least I didn't) the specific repeats. When I redid GMATPrep 1, I didn't recognize any quant, and all I recognized from verbal was one passage, though I didn't remember the questions or the answers. If you can space your repeats out, I would
