complex square root problem

by robertpatrick » Sat Jul 26, 2008 8:17 pm
For which of the values of x is sqrt(1 - sqrt( 2 - sqrt(x) ) ) NOT defined as a real number.

1
2
3
4
5

...ok so I'm looking for a value of x that will lead to the expression above trying to take the square root of a negative number. The first time through I thought to choose 4 because I thought that the expression would be undefined when it got to sqrt(0), but it's not undefined, it equals zero.

Answer is E. as sq root of 5 is greater than 2. the expression
