Hi Veeram,

Any adult can register and take the GMAT. Since it sounds like you're in the early "planning stages" of your studies, I'll be happy to advise.

Have you thought about what Business School(s) you would like to apply to? And when you would want to apply? That information will give us an idea of how well you would need to perform on the GMAT. From that, we can come up with a study plan.

There are many options to choose from when putting together a GMAT study plan, but most Test Takers find that the GMAC Official Guide and the free practice CAT tests and questions from www.mba.com are quite helpful.

Hi Veeram,

The average GMAT score for any incoming class to HBS is usually around 720-730; this score is above the 90th percentile. Even with a score that high, you still need to compete with everyone else who's applying to Harvard. Statistically speaking, only about 10% of applicants get in...and the one's that don't get in tend to be very strong applicants.

But one issue at a time. First, you need a score that you will be high enough to satisfy what HBS is looking for. Thankfully, since 720-730 is the AVERAGE, that does not mean that you need a 730, but you'll still want to score as high as you can.

Your plan to take the GMAT in December is smart because it gives you plenty of time to study. Have you taken any full-length practice CAT tests yet? If not, then you should take one and report back with your scores. Those numbers will give us a sense of your strengths and weaknesses and we can put together a study plan from there.

Dear Veeram

My best wishes with your endeavours to get into HBS. I'm interested to about know what motivates you to get into Harvard? Because I'm aiming for similar scores too!
The trouble with too many people is they believe the realm of success always lies within their exam preparation & hard work and not with his or her Manager

Hi Veeram,

I won't comment on a competitor's books, but I will say that the GMAC Official Guide 13th Edition is a great source for Official practice problems. Any other books that you're thinking about purchasing would probably be fine, but I would recommend working with the most recent versions. Much older versions of GMAT books will likely include some material that is slightly "out of date"

Since you've already listed HBS as your goal, I would highly recommend that you invest in a GMAT Course. I mentioned earlier that 700+ score is the 90th percentile. Since most Test Takers can't score at that level, investing in a GMAT Course would likely improve your chances.

Hi Veeram,

Each school has it's own requirements for admission to its MBA/Grad programs. For example, most Business Schools require that you take the GMAT, but some will accept a GRE score instead. To learn the exact details for any one program, I'd suggest that you visit that school's website. If the website is not clear enough with its information, then I'd suggest that you contact the school directly. In this way, you'll learn directly from the school's representatives about the admissions processes and what you'll need to provide.
