Manhattan Gmat beat me

by anishprabhu » Mon Feb 16, 2009 3:35 pm
I gave my self 10 weeks to prepare for the GMAT. I burned 3 of those solving practice questions online and from the OG. I took a couple of diagnostic test to get a feel of where i was. I noticed that i was able to stick to the 2 minute limit per question for most of the OG problems (Quant).

I took the first Manhattan Gmat test today and i felt totally lost. It was as if i had been practicing problems a level below what i saw in the test.

It was demoralizing and i feel like i have wasted the past 3 weeks of my studying. I have 7 weeks left and am questioning my studying technique.
Any advise?

Obviously just solving practice problems from the OG is not enough.

I know where you are coming from. Been there done that. I studied strictly from the OG however, I didn't put the hours needed. I think if you give yourself about 3 months of studying, that would be the best chance to succeed. What is your definition of failing? For me it was below 500. I had a pretty good GPA so all I was looking for was a 500.

Thanks for your reply. I wish i had the liberty to postpone my date but i dont. All i have is 7 weeks to make the best of it. I managed a 580 in the first attempt of the MGMAT. My target is 770 which is a jump of 200. I was reviewing my test and realize i got all of the 700-800 questions wrong along with a few 60-700 wrong :(

Obviously i need to put in a lot of work on questions of those levels. Anyone know where i can find the 650+ questions for practise?

You are correct, just solving practice problems is nowhere near enough.
Read some of the sticky strategies from the experts of this forum to learn how to properly prep for this beast of a test. Also redo and review all the errors you made in completing OG. this is wear you learn and improve!

Dont be demoralized, everybody's first practice test sucks. few people score well on the 1st go. Furthermore, manhat tests are known to be quite difficult in the quant section which would explain that feeling you got. The verbal however, in my opinion, is a pretty solid rep of whats on the official test. So more importantly than worrying about your mark on this test, learn from the mistakes you made on this test.

for a more accurate idea of where you stand, do gmatprep(although i would recommend saving them till youre deep in to your gmat studies).

hope that steers you in the right direction, best of luck.

I know what you mean about the mgmat. I took 3 of the practice tests and a gmat prep test (supposedly the best indicator of actual score). Scored 650 on gmat prep, and 630 on the 1st mgmat.... then the other day I scored a 570 on the 2nd mgmat test. The quant is extremely wordy, unlike most OG questions. I still think it is great practice. Don't be discouraged with your score, keep practicing.
