GMAT gave me the beatdown...580!

by exit22 » Thu Oct 23, 2008 9:23 am
Hey guys! I am new to beatthegmat.com and came looking for advice. I have been reading everyone's posts and have been very impressed. For the last two months, I have been going through the OG and the companion verb and quant guides and answered all the questions. I went through the explanations on both the questions I got right and the ones I got wrong. I took one of the practice tests from mba.com in the weeks leading up to the test. I came out with a 580. I was hoping for the 650-700 range.

Man I was pissed. I am tentatively planning on taking the test again in December (like December 15th). What can I do between now and then to make up that difference. I have considered the Kaplan, Veritas, and Manhattan GMAT online courses. I have considered taking a GMAT prep class at the local university to get some structured instruction and additional practice. I noticed that VeritasPrep has 15 online tests available...would their course be solid? Any advice would be great.

First, I will appreciate if you give me your split (Q,V). If you have 580, you have every right to be pissed.. but the good thing is you have over a month and a half for your actual test..

Verbal: Do the verbal section on OG 11. Read the explanations - they offer valuble insights. For SC, use Manhattan SC - very very good.. For CR, use Kaplan ... good strategies and for RC, use OG and maybe ARCO GRE.

Quant: For math, I strongly recommend 4GMAT's (www.4gmat.com) books and materials. I had used them to get a score of over 700. They ship materials worldwide and their e-books are very good.
