Distance between exits #13 DS OG11

by wolfe05 » Mon Apr 27, 2009 5:01 pm
This one is from the OG.

A certain expressway has exits J, K, L, and M, in that order. What is the road distance from exit K to exit L?

1) The road distance from J to L is 21 kilometers
2) The road distance from K to M is 26 kilometers

E

I don't understand why the answer isn't C.

Let’s say JK = x, KL = y and LM = z.

To answer the question we need to find y.

Using 1: x + y = 21 cant calculate y.

Using 2: y + z = 26 cant calculate y.

Using both the statements together we still cant compute as we have three variables and only two equations.

Huh ... Concluding answer blindly from Picture representation can very well lead us to wrong solution...
