Why E is better option than D? Is the usage of 'them' in option E alright?

D is wrong because it uses are

centuries ago clearly indicates that it should be were. So its wrong

E is written in participle form. It is right option

It cannot be written as , many of them are/were chiseled because it will become an independent clause and two independent clauses cannot be separated by a comma
