Q 26 (1000CR--> LSAT 24 -->section IV)

19. Nearly all mail that is correctly addressed arrives at its destination within two
business days of being sent. In fact, correctly addressed mail takes longer than this
only when it is damaged in transit. Overall, however, most mail arrives three
business days or more after being sent.
If the statements above are true, which one of the following must be true?
(A) A large proportion of the mail that is correctly addressed is damaged in transit.
(B) No incorrectly addressed mail arrives within two business days of being sent.
(C) Most mail that arrives within two business days of being sent is correctly
addressed.
(D) A large proportion of mail is incorrectly addressed.
(E) More mail arrives within two business days of being sent than arrives between
two and three business days after being sent.

Ans D. I chose C. Why is C wrong

26. Smoking in bed has long been the main cause of home fires. Despite a significant
decline in cigarette smoking in the last two decades, however, there has been no
comparable decline in the number of people killed in home fires.
Each one of the following statements, if true, over the last two decades, helps to
resolve the apparent discrepancy above EXCEPT:
(A) Compared to other types of home fires, home fires caused by smoking in bed
usually cause relatively little damage before they are extinguished.
(B) Home fires caused by smoking in bed often break out after the home’s
occupants have fallen asleep.
(C) Smokers who smoke in bed tend to be heavy smokers who are less likely to
quit smoking than are smokers who do not smoke in bed.
(D) An increasing number of people have been killed in home fires that started in
the kitchen.
(E) Population densities have increased, with the result

Ans B. I chose A why is A wrong

Thanks and Regards

The argument starts off with an estimated delivery time for
mail that is correctly addressed and ends with an estimated
delivery time for "all" mail.

A cannot be concluded with the info in the argument. We only
know about correctly addressed mail and incorrectly addressed
mail. It could be that the delay of 3 days or more is from the
incorrectly addressed mail

B takes the conclusion too far

C - corollary is not true. Correctly addressed mail comes within
2 days but not all mail that arrives within 2 days are correctly addressed
mail.

E is incorrect as it contradicts the last sentence of the argument

D is just better compared to the other options. Since correctly
addressed mail takes 2 days or less, we know that the
contributing factor for the overall 3 days or more are the
incorrectly addressed and "damaged in transit" kind.

Consdier the following funda of logical reasoning

X will not happen unless Y happens

This means that there are sevral things needed for X to happen out of which one is Y. So even if one of these several things is absecent then X will not happen. So it is not guranteed that if Y is there then X will surely happen since some other necessary thing might be abscent.

But is it sure that if X happens then Y must have happened. Because if X has happened then all the sevral components were there. So Y was also there.

Applying this logic to the problem

Being correctly addressed is one of the components for most of the mails to reach the destination within two days.

So most of the mails which have reached the destination within two days must have been addressed properly. Hence C

For not reaching the destination the two cases are
1. Mail incorrectly addressed
2. Mail damaged during tansit

Even if any one of them occurs then the mail does not reach in 2 days.

Out of these which one is more dominant reason than the other we cannot conclude form the argument.

D says that for not reaching in 2 days being incorrectly addressed is the more dominant factor. Hence D should be incorrect

So according to this logic C should be the correct answer and not D

I think A is the right answer
