Potential for or to ??
sahils note says for causing ..if so cant D be the right answer ??

Following the destruction of the space shuttle Challenger, investigators concluded that many key people employed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and its contractors work an excessive amount of overtime that has the potential of causing errors in judgment.

(A) overtime that has the potential of causing
(B) overtime that has the potential to cause
(C) overtime that potentially can cause
(D) overtime, a practice that has the potential for causing
(E) overtime, a practice that can, potentially, cause

IMO B.

potential of causing - I feel its wrong.
C - potentially is not used properly here
D - we don't need practice here. OVERTIME is not a practice.
E - confusing.

I'm not sure about the answer. Waiting for others to reply.

(E) overtime, a practice that can, potentially, cause
Can & potential - > redundancy

B/C

that is modifying overtime. How can OVERTIME have potential ?

IMHO I think it's B as well. It's smoother.

Im just starting the GMAT verbal so I really don't have anything conclusive to back it up besides my experience.

Is it B ? Final answer ?

Hi,
I don't know anything about Sahil's note. So Can not comment anything no that.

I think the main concept here is "Modifier issue"

someone concluded that ppl work excessive amount of overtime that can cause...

NOW - That seems to modifying 'overtime'....but we need a modifier which can modify the Whole IDEA.

so Just after reading the Question, I Eliminate A,B, and C.

out of D and E..
that has the potential for causing error : its seems odd to me.

i think correct Idiom should be :
that has potential to cause error..

E has no doubt. so seems correct to me.

Can D be a possibility?


(A) overtime that has the potential of causing
of causing seems incorrect
(B) overtime that has the potential to cause
that modifies overtime?
(C) overtime that potentially can cause
same as B and potentially can cause is awkward
(D) overtime, a practice that has the potential for causing
working overtime is a type of practice
(E) overtime, a practice that can, potentially, cause
sentence fragments, hence incorrect

IMO E .

A, B and C out for modifier issue .
Left with D and E .

I got this wonderful and to the point explanation :--

TAKE 1
1] "has the potential for causing" wordier than "can, potentially, cause.
2] just using the verb form (since we're talking about an action, that's preferred to writing the verb in noun form).

"potential to" --> just describes a potential effect of something; may or may not be intentional or aimed at some goal
"potential for" --> used only when a specific goal is intended. in the first sentence, this goal is the relieving of severe pain.

You are correct about the redundancy
Even I thought it was C
But look closely at C
It has a modifier issue
that modifies "overtime"

However we want to refer to the whole practice of overtime by NASA workers
Therefore even though E is slightly redundant
It is the better option....

Hope I have made myself clear
