36. Bufo marinus toads, fierce predators that will eat frogs, lizards, and even small birds, are native to South
America but were introduced into Florida during the 1930's in an attempt to control pests in the state's vast
sugarcane fields.
(A) are native to South America but were introduced into Florida during the 1930's in an attempt to control
(B) are native in South America but were introduced into Florida during the 1930's as attempts to control
(C) are natives of South America but were introduced into Florida during the 1930's in an attempt at
controlling
(D) had been native to South America but were introduced to Florida during the 1930's as an attempt at
controlling

GMAT OG says the correct answer is A. Please explain....

In case of non humans native to is better than native of and also attempt to is the correct idiom when compared with attempt at. so IMO A

Just apply "attempt to" and eliminate CDE

now see
B cant be CORRECT as it uses native in

hence A

GMAT OG says the correct answer is A. Please explain....
In general, we use "native of" when we're speaking of an individual (human or otherwise); we use "native to" when we're speaking about a larger group.

Some examples:

Bob is a native of Houston, Texas.

Corn is native to North America.

Flipper is a native of the Bahamas.

Australopithecus is native to Eastern and Northern Africa.

Another thing to note: the verb preceding "native to" should always be in the present tense.
