CORRECT SENTENCE: Scientists have recently discovered that the ultrathin, layered construction of a butterfly's wings enables the insect to control how much heat energy is absorbed by its wings and how much is reflected away.

What is the difference between ultrathin, layered construction and ultrathin AND layered construction in above sentence

By using the comma, 'ultrathin' becomes a qualifier for the 'layered construction'
By using 'and', 'ultrathin' qualifies the wings rather than the 'construction'
So, depending on what you want to talk about, you can use either of the two forms of construction.

I think even in above case 'ultrathin' and 'layered' modifies 'construction' because 'ultrathin' is an ADJECTIVE so 'ultrathin of a butterfly's wings' as suggested above would be incorrect

Aren't these 2 sentences mean SAME
a) the ultrathin, layered construction of a butterfly's wings enables the insect
b) the ultrathin and layered construction of a butterfly's wings enables the insect
