1000 SC question NO 83

by magical cook » Sun Mar 18, 2007 7:02 pm
Hello,

I know the reason why A),B) and D) are wrong, but it seems to me the correct answer is C) because "all three" match broadcast.

Could anyone please explain whey the answer is E) ???

Although it claims to delve into political issues, television can be superficial such as when each of the three major networks broadcast exactly the same statement from a political candidate.

(A) superficial such as when each of the three major networks
(B) superficial, as can sometimes occur if all of the three major networks
(C) superficial if the three major networks all
(D) superficial whenever each of the three major networks
(E) superficial, as when the three major networks each

I think the answer to this can be found in Spidey's SC notes on the wiki.

Since the verb used is broadcast (and not broadcasts), the subject
should be plural.

"each of ..." should be followed by a singular verb. So, A and D
are incorrect.

B and C are wordy / awkward.

That leaves us with E. This sentence follows the exception to the
"each" rule that mostly takes a singlular subject.

The exception is as follows --
When "each" follows a plural subject, it takes a plural verb.

C is wrong because it changes the meaning. Original sentence has given an example of when television can become superficial. C makes it a necessary condition that all three broadcast the same thing and then only television becomes superficial.
