SC-Elimination stragey-Quick reference

by microke » Wed Aug 20, 2008 3:55 am
I have compiled some quick reference for eliminating wrong answer choices in SC questions:

1) Look for noun and verb consistency - Especially when the underlined word is immediately after the noun and the candidate is confused by giving a long sentence between noun and the verb.

2) Look for tenses -Especially when past perfect and past is combined in one sentence. In most of the cases simple past is sufficient

3) Look for run on sentences - Proper separation of phrases done by commas

4) Look for parallelism in the statements - Try to plug in your answer choices and read the complete sentence in your mind. Try to find the rhythm-For example, "cost associated with upgrading ......and with the development" & "reducing costs........and increasing efficiency"

5) Look for the joining phrase- "and" in question and answer choices. If by mistake "and" is missed, your answer choice will not be even near to the expected answer.

6) Look for pronouns, in the answer choices- Try to plug in the pronouns in the original sentence and check they have any logical referents.

7) Understand whether a noun is compared or any action (verb is compared) - Use "like" or unlike for comparing things and "as" or "so" for comparing actions

8) Memorize important standard idioms :

between x and y
from x to y
as.....as
aimed at
targeted at
prohibit of
rid of etc.,

Always scan through the sentence to find whether the question is checking for the standard form or not.

This will help in eliminating obviously wrong answer choice and then one can definitely scrutinize the remaining answer choices. Hope this helps.

Thanks for sharing those tips microke.
About standard idioms I'd suggest you to search more on the forums I think some people have posted list of many idioms.

I am moving it to SC section. :)
