we need an ing form of verb because we need to show a cause n effect relationship....

cause---> particulate matter blocked sunlight

effect ------->prohibiting photosynthesis

therefore D is correct

IMO D

All other answers makes the second part of the sentence a run on sentence.

"prohibiting" is correct
