Pacing strategy in SC

by kashefian » Fri Oct 15, 2010 8:40 am
I use the recommended Manhattan GMAT SC strategy which is to split the answer choices and to eliminate them until one remains.

For every question, I read the question carefully and then scan through the answer choices. Then I try to find the differences between answer choices. As soon as I find an split, I scan through them and the same steps applies.

Most of my answers are correct (90-93 % now) but I have to spend an average of 1.75 minutes per question. Any recommendations / strategies to help improve my pacing. I read that I have to spend 60 seconds per question to save time for reading comprehension questions.

Please helppppp!

A couple of thoughts here: First of all, if you're pacing under 2 minutes per question you should be feeling pretty good. Ideally for SC, you want to be between 1 minute and 1:30, but keep in mind that some of the more difficult questions might take a bit longer, and if you're getting them right (which you seem to be doing), then it's time well spent!

Reading through your strategy, my one recommendation is to let any errors in the sentence as written (answer choice A) guide your first round of elimination. Rather than reading the sentence then looking for a split in the answer choices, try reading the sentence to identify an error. If you find one, immediately get rid of choice A and any other choice with the same error. THEN you can compare the remaining choices and look for other splits. You might already be following a similar strategy, but this can often shave a few seconds off SC questions.

Hope that helps!

Hi Jen,

I need your opinion on my next move.

I started my prep with SC in mid aug, and am having an accuracy of around 75% in OG 10 / OG 11 and Kaplan.

Now, i am unable to decide my next move,

1)whether to keep on doing the remaining prob set of OG 12 and Verbal Review ?
2)Work again on fundamentals for some time , and then take on the questions ?
3)I am targetting 700+ , and what is an ideal accuracy in OG ?
4) I am ensuring that i don't take anything more then 1.5 mins per SC Question
5) I am giving a lot of time to review questions , is it wrong ?

Pls give your opinion on my next move...

Thanks very much

Hiren
