Climatic shifts are so gradual as to be indistinguishable at first from ordinary fluctuations in the weather.

(A) so gradual as to be indistinguishable
(B) so gradual they can be indistinguishable
(C) so gradual that they are unable to be distinguished
(D) gradual enough not to be distinguishable
(E) gradual enough so that one cannot distinguish them

Why is C wrong?

IMO A

C is wrong since you cant use they for climatic changes....Thus it looks like they refer to somebody unknown who is not there in the tense.

I think, we might need some expert to pitch in...My take away from Manhattan may be jinxed....

There is nothing wrong with the pronoun they. Here it refers to Climatic shifts. But it is wordier than A

I am really amazed to find that the answer is not C!

I am doubtful about A.
