"If" is necessary in the sentence to make complete sense which leaves A,D,E.

E can be eliminated as frantic pace does not refer to anything.
D uses "denies" incorrectly.

I think OA is A

E is correctly the OA.

One needs to know that when possessive nouns are used, he cannot use "him" to refer to it. Only "his" is permitted in such cases. In this case you need to refer to Balzaic in final portion of the underlined part. You will have to write Balzaic again to refer to him instead of using "him". Hope it helps.
