The election observers said that there were fewer violations in the presidential election than in the parliamentary race.

I wanted to know whether this sentence is correct. I read in MGMT that we dont put "that" after "said".

Can some expert please clarify this?

Could someone please explain the usage of "that" after the word "said", when to use that and when not?

Regards.

IMO:_Both ways it will be correct. You will never see such situation in any question.

Have you ever seen any quesstion with the usage of said and then two same sentences with just a difference of that. NO this will never happen.

I agree that this may not be the main point of elimination, but if you know the right principles, you can certainly use them to eliminate the wrong options to reach the right one more quickly.

Will request some expert, to enlighten us in this regard.

it's fine both ways.

USUALLY, you'll see "that" after "said" -- really for no other reason than that it's considered more attractive to write it that way.

on the other hand, it's not wrong to omit "that".
if there is another instance of the word "that" nearby, then this instance of "that" becomes more likely to be eliminated, for the sake of reducing unattractive repetition.
for instance:
At one time, the majestic American chestnut was so prevalent that it was said a squirrel could jump from tree to tree without once touching the ground between New York State and Georgia. (correct answer on GMAT PREP)
... but
It can hardly be said that educators are at fault... (og12 #57)

so, yeah, can't use this one for elimination. sorry.
