Three hundred guests is as many as even the most ambitious host or hostess should invite, and this number of guests is advisable only when circumstances actually demand it.

I dont know why the option D is incorrect. I was lost between the options A and D. Would go for the option D.

I think the 'that' is required to deliver the intended meaning of the sentence.

Could any of you guyzzz please explain... what is the problem with the option D.

AS MANY THAT - is incorrect idiom; AS MANY will come with another AS

SO X THAT Y - used when Y EXPLAINS X (this is not the intention here

Therefore, incorrect idiom - B/D;
Inappropriate use of SO...THAT - C/E

A remains

I got my query answered as the 'as many that' is simply unidiomatic. Thanks for the answer...

Also Lala let me tell you where you are wrong. The idiom 'so x that y' is inappropriate here..

The idiom is used when you want to describe y in after the x. Also the idiom 'so x that y' is more of a modifier to modify or hype the thing.

Eg: So high that it was not reachable

Eg: So good that it could not be true

etc...

Such a relationship is simply missing out here...
