Chocolates

by anshulseth » Wed May 13, 2009 3:03 am
Previous studies have indicated that eating chocolate
increases the likelihood of getting heart disease.
However, a new, more reliable study has indicated
that eating chocolate does not increase the likeli-
hood of getting heart disease. When the results of
the new study become known, consumption of
chocolate will undoubtedly increase.

Which of the following is an assumption on which
the conclusion above is based?
(A) Most people who eat a great deal of chocolate
will not get heart disease.
(B) Although they believe that eating chocolate
increases the likelihood of getting heart
disease, some people still eat as much
chocolate as they want.
(C) People who have heard that eating chocolate
increases the likelihood of getting heart
disease do not believe it.
(D) There are people who currently eat as much
chocolate as they want because they have not
heard that eating chocolate increases the
likelihood of getting heart disease.
(E) There are people who currently limit their
consumption of chocolate only because they
believe that eating chocolate increases the
likelihood of getting heart disease.

Back ur IMO with reasoning plz.
I have the OA, but no OE, and thus have the confusion.

Yes, very tricky question. IMO E

The fact states that when heard of other reliable study, people will undoubtedly increase their consume of chocolate ? Why will this happen ? Maybe the line of reasoning is that the author assumes that there is no other reasons that can hamper the consume of chocolate. If there are, the announcement of a new more reliable study doesn't surely increase the consume of chocolate. Other reasons, if any, will keep the consume of chocolate continuously constant.

So, I choose E. I think my explanation is good enough for you to eliminate other choices, so I don't post their incorrectness points

The conclusion is : When the results of the new study become known, consumption of chocolate will undoubtedly increase.

Why does the author think that the consumption will increase? Because the author assumes that people's intake of chocolates is depended on the studies. Only if people base their intake on studies, they will increase or restrict their consumption. Hence this is an assumption that the author makes.

Looking at the answer choices E correctly points to this assumption that they limit their intake only because the previous study said there is a threat. Now that the new study said there no problem, they'll increase their consumption.

Ans-E . I found it simple as the conclusion is "When the results of
the new study become known, consumption of chocolate will undoubtedly increase" only possible when we make an assumption "that there are many people who eat less chocolate b'use they affraid of heart disease, so once they get to know about new research consumption will increase.

OA is E
But i had confusion between C and E

If people believe the new study, OR they don't believe the old study.
E says the former, while C the latter. Which one to choose.

Y is C wrong?

If C were then there is no use of new study.
You need to find an answer choice where it uses new study.

My answer E.
A. doesn't help drive the conclusion.
B. if they're already ignoring research, new ones won't change their minds
C. again, research doesn't move them.
D. then the new news won't change anything.
E. room for change.
