Catering business - Help to solve the CR

by Motherjane » Fri Jul 11, 2008 3:13 am
Now is an excellent time to invest in the catering business. A survey conducted by Weddings magazine found that 70 percent of the magazine’s readers want a catered wedding reception. An analysis of the catering industry, however, shows that the current number of caterers can serve only 55 percent of the weddings likely to occur each year.

1. Which of the following, if true, reveals a weakness in the evidence cited above?
(A) Catering is a highly labor-intensive business.
(B) Caterers are not evenly distributed across the country.
(C) The number of weddings with catered receptions has been growing each year for the past five years.
(D) Readers of Weddings magazine are more likely than most people to want a catered reception.
(E) Weddings magazine includes both articles about catered receptions and articles about preparing food oneself for one’s wedding reception.

2.Which of the following, if true, would undermine the validity of the investment advice in the paragraph above?
(A) The average wedding reception involves between 50 and 100 guests.
(b) Approximately a quarter of all weddings take place without a reception.
(C) Approximately a quarter of all weddings and their associated receptions are paid for by the couples themselves.
(D) Only half of all catered wedding receptions include sit-down meals.
(E) Only half of those who say they want a catered wedding reception actually have one.

Hey raunekk,

Thanks for the prompt reply. But why it should be B and E.

I do not think that spread of caterers has any relevance to the decision of investing in catering business.

Also, how many people say that they have catered reception is unknown.
The information given in B for 2nd question is more concrete than E.

I say the answers are D and B.

Kindly explain your answers.

Would request Stuart to kindly explain the same.
Thanks.

hi Motherjane,

For 1st, Even i was confused between D and B.
Initially i selected D but then went for B.My reasoning..

Stimulus says:

1.A survey conducted by Weddings magazine found that 70 percent of the magazine’s readers want a catered wedding reception.
2. An analysis of the catering industry, however, shows that the current number of caterers can serve only 55 percent of the weddings likely to occur each year.

Here,a conclusion is stated and one "for" and one "against" statement is provided to support the conclusion.
Now,
D: Readers of Weddings magazine are more likely than most people to want a catered reception.

Fine!!This can be a weakness. But this supports just one part of it.What about "An analysis of the catering industry, however, shows that the current number of caterers can serve only 55 percent of the weddings likely to occur each year. "

B states "Caterers are not evenly distributed across the country."
So this can be a reason that caterers are able to serve just 55% of the weddings. So even if 70% want " a catered wedding reception", B can be a solid reason to not to invest in the business.

For 2,

Here , i was confused between E and B,
Though I am not very confident in this one..

But, "Half of 70%" is still a big number in comparison with "a quater of weddings "without reception

What if there are 10,000 weddings???:)

Hope this helps..

thx.

Why E for the second option?

We still don't know how many people read the Weddings magazine.
We are also not sure abt how many people dilly dallying on having their reception catered?

According to b, 25% of all weddings are without reception. 75% are with reception. How many of them are being catered is still unknown.

How do we decide between these two options which both have some data missing?

The questions asks which undermines the validity of investment advice. Why wouldn't it make any sense to invest? or better yet at what point would investment in this business/industry make the least sense? There is a call to invest because the industry doesn't have enough people to work weddings that are going to come up through the year (speculative). We are assuming there are going to be a lot of wedding receptions, but if only 50% of the wedding we think will occur, actually do occur, then the industry is fully equipped to cover the wedding reception orders at 55% staff.....because that 55% will now be working only 50% of its actual orders....thus there is no reason to be excited about investing because there is not a lot of business out there for a potential investor as initially stated...that is my reasoning... and I am going against B because if 75% still want wedding receptions, another 20% workers/investors are needed so it is still a great idea to invest based on this.

and for the first question I dont like answer B because nothing is said about the dstribution of caterers in the paragraph. Can you explain why you think it is relevant to the argument?

For the 1 st question. I would go with B when it reveal that they survey is not a representative sample when the distribution of the sample is not even through the country.

For the 2 nd Q.
I would go with E.
E unveil that only 50% of people want the reception do that. 50% not.
the market for caterer is not potential as the survey stated.
Please share your idea and your reasoning :D

1. D
The survey was done with the magazine's readers only.
But the analysis of the catering industry is done in the market of the catering industry.

Therefore, these 2 things are not comparable. The only answer that brings this fact out is (D).

2. E

Investment advice : Now is an excellent time to invest in the catering business
An answer should undermine the validity of the above statement. what is the best answer?
If only 50% of the people who say they want a catering reception actually have one then we can say that "Now will not be an excellent time to invest in the catering business"
