What is the value of x? (Mixing Problem)

by CappyAA » Tue Aug 12, 2008 5:21 pm
A contractor combined x tons of a gravel mixture that contained 10 percent gravel G, by weight, with y tons of a mixture that contained 2 percent gravel G, by weight, to produce z tons of a mixture that was 5 percent gravel G, by weight. What is the value of x?

(1) y = 10
(2) z = 16

Thanks,
Cappy

The ans should be C

10x+2y=5Z or 5(x+y)

Stm1. y=10 sufficient to know x
Stm2. z=(x+y)=16 sufficient to know x

Hence D

The ans is D here.

From q : 10x+2y=5(x+y)

we need to find x...

from 1) : y=10 => 10x+2*10=5(x+10) so , x is solvable.
Sufficient

From 2) : z=16 i.e. x+y=16......... (1)
also we have, 10x+2y=5(x+y)
=> 10x+2y=5*16........(2)

comparing these above tow eq we can get the value of x.
Sufficient.

x/y=(5%-2%)/(10%-5%)=3/5

1) y= 10 x=3y/5=30/5=6

2) z= 16 since x=3/8*z , then 3/8*16=6

ans is D
