Weakness question

by sarthak » Fri Mar 19, 2010 7:58 pm
In an effort to go beyond resumes as tools in its search for executives, one leading company has resorted to interviewing the top candidates for a position all together in a single group. This technique is supposed to afford a direct comparison of the candidates with respect to some personal qualities that cannot be gleaned from a resume.

Which of the following, if true, casts the most serious doubt on the value of the simultaneous interview technique?

(A) Resumes do sometimes allow reliable inferences to be made about a candidate's personal qualities.

(B) The simultaneous interview could become cumbersome if there were a great many candidates for a position.

(C) The more perceptive the interviewer, the more revealing the simultaneous interview is apt to be.

(D) There are certain personal qualities that only an extended simultaneous interview can bring out.

(E) The simultaneous interview distorts each candidate's response style by inducing stresses unlike any an executive position induces.

The simultaneous interview may be a bad idea because it is cumbersome (B) or it brings about unique stress (E)
In (A) The company is looking for qualities which are not brought our by personal interview.
(C) So if the interviewer is good the output is good. No doubt on the method of Simultaneous Interview.
(D) Strengthens.
Back to (B) - maybe it is held in smaller batches it is manageable.
(E) The process induces stress and affect his/her performance. The stress is unlike what they will encounter in work life. So the Simultaneous interview can give wrong output. Correct.

A weaken question and a tricky one with very close answer options .

(A) Resumes do sometimes allow reliable inferences to be made about a candidate’s personal qualities.
[Note the word sometimes allow this is true but not always . Although this option weakens the conclusion but not completely . But still can be a candidate , lets see other options.]

(B) The simultaneous interview could become cumbersome if there were a great many candidates for a position.
[We are more concerned with a single group interview technique can it bring out some qualities that are not shown in resumes . If too many candidates are in interview the process will be cumbersome for the person conducting the interview and we are not concerned with them , out of scope , eliminate. ]
(C) The more perceptive the interviewer, the more revealing the simultaneous interview is apt to be.
[The option supports the conclusion , eliminate]

(D) There are certain personal qualities that only an extended simultaneous interview can bring out.
[Again an option in support of conclusion , eliminate]

(E) The simultaneous interview distorts each candidate’s response style by inducing stresses unlike any an executive position induces.
[Now this option talks about some thing that effects the performance of the person giving the interview , correct ]
"Know thyself" and "Nothing in excess"
