total cost of the dinner? DS problem

The total cost an office dinner was shared equally by k of the n employees who attended the dinner. What was the total cost of the dinner?

A) each of the k employees who shared the cost of the dinner paid $19.
b) if the total cost of the dinner had been shared equally by k+1 of the employees who attended the dinner,each of the k+1 employees would have paid $18.

Answer - C

Explanation -
Total Cost of Dinner(TCoD) from statement A = k*19 - does not give any number, so A alone is not sufficient
TCoD from statement B = (k+1)*18 - does not give any number, so B alone is not sufficient

Both together -
k*19 = (k+1)*18

We can solve for k and find the total cost.

Let the total cost of the dinner = T

(1) T = 19 * k. There is one equation and two variables; NOT sufficient.

(2) T = 18(k + 1). Again, there is one equation and two variables; NOT sufficient.

Combining (1) and (2), 19k = 18k + 18 or k = 18, so now T can be found; SUFFICIENT.

The correct answer is C.

(A) Total Cost =19k. k is unknown. So INSUFFICIENT
(B) Total Cost =18(k+1). k is unknown . So INSUFFICIENT

Combining We can find k. So SUFFICIENT and (C) is the answer
