D:M:N = 3:5:8.
The sum of the parts of the ratio = 3+5+8 = 16.
The values in red indicate the following:
Nicole's fraction of the total = 8/16 = 1/2.
Since Nicole's $28,000 is 1/2 of the total, the total = $56,000.

The correct answer is E.

We can express the ratio as 3x : 5x : 8x. Nicole earned $28,000 so we can create the equation:

8x = 28,000

x = 3500

So the total earned by all 3 people was 3x + 5x + 8x = 16x. Thus, we have 16 x 3500 = $56,000.
