The airline company!!_GMATPREP

by gmat_perfect » Tue Jun 08, 2010 8:55 pm
The airline company, following through on recent warnings that it might start reducing service, announced that it was eliminating jet service to nine cities, closing some unneeded operations, and it grounded twenty-two planes.

(A) closing some unneeded operations, and it grounded
(B) closing some unneeded operations, and grounding
(C) was closing some unneeded operations, while it grounded
(D) it closed some unneeded operations and grounded
(E) it was closing some unneeded operations, and grounding

OA: Later.

Though the answer is B, but I am not sure whether the sentence is correct. Is there any typo in this. The sentence seems to have tense issues.

The airline company announced that it was doing some actions (no action clarity here....what happens at first place? announcement or elimination, closure and grounding)

The sentence should be:

The airline company announces that it was doing X, Y, and Z

or

The airline company announced that it had been doing X, Y, and Z

Experts, please explain this.

Think about the following examples:

He was eating, reading, and watching TV.

=> The same structure has been followed in this sentence.

it was eliminating XX, closing YY, and grounding ZZ.

Answer is B.

What about other options:

The airline company, following through on recent warnings that it might start reducing service, announced that it was eliminating jet service to nine cities, closing some unneeded operations, and it grounded twenty-two planes.

(A) closing some unneeded operations, and it grounded

> And it grounded has broken the parallelism.

(B) closing some unneeded operations, and grounding
==> Proper parallelism.

(C) was closing some unneeded operations, while it grounded

=> While usually ends in verbing. Besides, while it grounded breaks the parallelism.

(D) it closed some unneeded operations and grounded

=> t creates run on sentence since two independent clauses have been joined by comma only.

(E) it was closing some unneeded operations, and grounding

=> It was closing is redundant and at the same time violates the parallelism.

Thanks.

Hey GMAT_perfect...
I am still in doubt whether the statement is correct.

The airline company, following through on recent warnings that it might start reducing service, announced that it was eliminating jet service to nine cities, closing some unneeded operations, and grounding twenty-two planes.

The first bold sentence seems to be as if it is in present tense and the second bold sentence is in past sentence...

Shouldn't it be "It will eliminate or it would eliminate" or "it has been eliminating"

Please correct me if i am wrong...

Thanks.
