This definitely looks a weird question, but still Op C seems the best. See, this question seems tough because the comparison indicators looks really weird. initially i thought that the best way to write this sentence is
A study on couples' retirement transitions found that women who took new jobs after retiring from their primary careers reported high marital satisfaction than those who retired completely.
but unfortunately there is no such answer choice. In Op C, if u notice "SO" it describes this part "reported high marital satisfaction"......if u think in that way Op C seems correct.

Hence C it is.aspirant2011 wrote:A study on couples' retirement transitions found that women who took new jobs after retiring from their primary careers reported high marital satisfaction, more than when retiring completely.
(A) more than when retiring -- missing a subject of comparison. POE.
(B) more than if they were to retire -- unnecessary introduction of hypothetical subjunctive if.POE.
(C) more so than those who retired -- more so a qualifier to show more satisfaction level in M' relationship. 'those' - correct subject of comparison. Hold.
(D) which was more so than those retiring -- which usage not correct POE.
(E) which was more than if they had retired -- which usage not correct POE.
