Confused between option C and E. I feel E is the right one, can any one explain ?

"Architects and stonemasons" is a modifier. This phrase refers to the people who built "the huge palaces and temples". Hence immediately following the comma, you should have the people who performed this action. Hence, "the Maya" (the subject) would be placed after the comma. The only option that does that is C.
