DS questions from Gmat Prep exam

Hi,

I've noticed that I take longer than avg. to solve word translation problems ( Can someone help me with some tips?)

I've also attached 2 DS problems from the Gmat prep practice exams. Please help with solution

OA for 1st is A and 2nd is C

This was a question from one of Manhattan's practice GMAT tests so I assumed that it would be very similar to the real GMAT. Even I was very surprised to see that x>0 was not provided. Anyway, i would take it that my reasoning is correct.
