how do i treat the values here - as positive?

inequality question

x and y are both > 1. Is x a multiple of y?

(1) 3y^2 + 7y = x
(2) x^2-x is a multiple of y

I can see why 2 does not work, but why does one work?

A driver completed the first 20 miles of a forty miles trip at an avg. of 50 mph. At what avg. speed must the driver complete the last 20 miles to achieve an avg. speed of 60mph for the entire 40 miles trip?

If x and y are greater than 0, is x=1?

1) x/y = 1
2) xy=1

Statement 1 tells us x = 1y -> n.s.
Statement 2 tells us x = 1/y -> n.s.

So now taking 1 + 2, we get: y^2=1 -> y=1 or y=-1
Therefore x is neg or pos 1 ... hence ans is E...

Where am I wrong? cause OA is C...

If x-y > 10; is x-y >x+y ?

1) x=8
2) y=-20


it is pretty obvious that 2) is working - but why is 1)? maybe stupid q - but I just dont see it...
