how is an 800 possible?

I just took my 4th GMATPrep test and got a 790. Sounds good, but... I got a perfect 51 on Quant and 51 on Verbal. Shouldn't that be an 800?? (Don't get me wrong, I'm not whining about the score - I'm only aiming for a 750, and obviously business schools don't care about 790 v. 800. And I had seen a ...

squares versus square roots

I know it's a rule that when x^2 = 81, the solution is x = 9 or -9, and when x = sqrt(81), the answer is just positive 9. So, I just take this as a given on the GMAT.

But I'm still wondering... why is this true?? It doesn't seem to make sense.
