I think D is the best answer because it parallels "not from" twice... Answer E is similar but I don't think "being important" parellels "their role" as well as "their importance."

I think the answers are both E because this answer choice doesn't change the subject of the sentence and doesn't make the sentence sound awkward or unidiomatic.
