Making a joke to open an essay
I was wondering, is it acceptable to open one of your essays with a little humor, perhaps a self-deprecating joke of some sort, or is that looked upon as too unprofessional by Adcoms?

Thanks, for the reply, I'm considering whether to get assistance from a consulting service, but haven't decided yet
Right now I'm trying to see where I stand test and UG wise and then focus on the other aspects of my application

Do I have a chance of getting into HBS?
I got a 720 on my GMAT and my Undergrad GPA was a 4.0
I was wondering if I can get into HBS with that profile, or should I retake the GMAT? (I can probably get a higher score since I lost 10 minutes in the quant section due to an unscheduled break, but I'd rather not retake it unless I have to)

I've been very pleased with Knewton, and have seen over 150 point rise in my practice test scores.
As with any test prep program you get what you put in, the more effort and work you're willing to put in, the better your result will be.

I would only take 1-2 more practice tests. If you take more than that, you will probably get too worried about your scores and not focus on actually improving. Therefore, I would be cautious in taking many more practice tests. Definitely take at least one GMAT Prep test though, as those tests are t...

Like I said, focus on your content, You should get the 8 Manhattan GMAT books and the Powerscore SC and CR books and read them all, go through all of it, really try to understand it, then work through the Official guide questions, that should get you ready for the test.

If you're in the 300-400 range, that means you need to focus on content, study math and verbal concepts, then run through the OG questions That being said, you want about a 200 point rise, that may not be possible by the 26th, you may have to take the test again later. If you do, I recommend signing...

Actually all those tests have been in the last 25 days, and those scores were in order, so a 730, 650, 690 and 740 in that order. Thanks for your advice, I'm pretty good at staying focused, I've been studying since summer now, and I've been able to stay on top of things til now, and now that the fin...

Strategy for the last few weeks
Hey guys, I'm down to the last 25 days of my review, and my recent practice tests from the past three weeks have been fluctuating, the lowest was a 650 and the highest was a 740 (Knewton 730 and 650 and MGMAT 690, 740). First off, is this sort of fluctuation normal? It has me kind of concerned Secon...

Depends on how strong you are on the content to begin with Take a practice test, and get a baseline score, that should tell you where you are, and how far you are from your target. If you're already at 580+ and all you need is a 600, then sure the OG and two GMATPrep tests will probably be enough. I...

What is your target socre, how much time are you willing to spend preparing, and what sources are you planning to use? I would say for every 100 points you want to gain, you probably need about one and a half months of prep, with about 20 hours of study a week. I would go with Knewton, the MGMAT 8 g...
