A historian attempting to predict in the 1870's which nation would take over world leadership from the British probably would have guessed Bismarck's Prussia and been quite wrong.
If I convert the sentence to present tense ->
A historian attempting to predict today which nation will take over world leadership from the British probably will guess Bismarck's Prussia and be quite wrong.
Converting the above to past tense, D looks right.
IMO, D
What is the OA please?

IMO D.
The first part A historian attempting to predict i (happening now)
so eliminate A B C
between d and E .. i choose D
