I think the answer is quite clearly D. Explanation as follows:gmat009 wrote:Oberlin College in Ohio was a renegade institution at its 1833 founding for deciding to accept both men and women as students.
(A) at its 1833 founding for deciding to accept
(B) for the decision at its 1833 founding to accept
(C) when it was founded in 1833 for its decision to accept
(D) in deciding at its founding in 1833 to accept
(E) by deciding at its founding in 1833 on the acceptance of
Oberlin college was a renegade institution because it decided to accept both men and women.. this is important.. Let's look at answer choices:
a. at its 1833 founding is incorrectly put there..
b. for the decision is awkward composition.
c. suggests that it was a renegade institution when it was founded in 1833
d.Bingo!! this is our answer..
e. by deciding is not the correct usage.. in deciding is the correct usage.

No offense but typing "Bingo" is not enough to explain why that very choice is correct.dumb.doofus wrote:I think the answer is quite clearly D. A and B can be ruled our for the use of 'at its 1833 founding' which suggests there were more than one founding.
E can be ruled out for the use of 'on the acceptance of'.
I picked C, but as it turns out OA is D. Now I am not sure.
Can somebody explain this. Thanks in advance.

i think the purpose of the sentence is to show that the college was a renegade in its action of deciding. and not specifically in 1833 or at its founding.
b and e had me thinking but ultimately they sounded awkward to me. a and c change the purpose of the sentence as i described above, so i ruled them out. finally d is the only answer that keeps the purpose of the sentence in check and i couldnt see any mistakes in it either. therefore i chose d.

Ooops.. I am sorry.. Let me explain.. the sentence that I have written on top.. i.e. "Oberlin college was a renegade institution because it decided to accept both men and women.." Choice D actually states this.. that is why this is our answer.. it also uses the correct usage.. "in deciding"...Bidisha800 wrote:No offense but typing "Bingo" is not enough to explain why that very choice is correct.dumb.doofus wrote:I think the answer is quite clearly D. One of the challenges with public and loosely moderated forum is to separate music from noise. One has to tolerate lots of noise (and nonsense) before finding the music.dumb.doofus wrote:Ooops.. ANSWER HERE:
A and B are wrong because the college has only one founding, whereas "at its 1833 founding" makes it look like it has multiple founding days.
C. is wrong because it was not founded for its decision, changes meaning.
E. by deciding...on the acceptance, they did not become rogue by "deciding on the aacceptance", here we are unsure if the college accepted or not.
D. Clears up the ambiguity in E.
