A recent survey of all auto accident victims in Dole County found that, of the severely injured drivers and front"seat passengers, 80 percent were not wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents. This indicates that, by wearing seat belts, drivers and front"seat passengers can greatly reduce their risk of being severely injured if they are in an auto accident.

The conclusion above is not properly drawn unless which of the following is true?

A. Of all the drivers and front"seat passengers in the survey, more than 20 percent were wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents.
B. Considerably more than 20 percent of drivers and front"seat passengers in Dole County always wear seat belts when travelling by car.
C. More drivers and front"seat passengers in the survey than rear"seat passengers were very severely injured.
D. More than half of the drivers and front"seat passengers in the survey were not wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents.
E. Most of the auto accidents reported to police in Dole County do not involve any serious injury.

Answer is A

Amir,

There were 100 Accidents

80 Were not wearing seatbelts or 20 were wearing the seatbelts , it can also be such that 20 didn't have seatbelts installed in their cars.

The red highlighted part marked above takes into consideration that -

They had Seatbelts installed in their car & they wore seatbelts.

The conclusion above is not properly drawn unless which of the following is true?

This question insists finding the correct assumption among the answer choices presented before us.

A. Of all the drivers and front"seat passengers in the survey, more than 20 percent were wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents.

True - 20% were wearing seatbelts.

B. Considerably more than 20 percent of drivers and front"seat passengers in Dole County always wear seat belts when travelling by car.

May be true , we don't have sufficient data to claim the same.

C. More drivers and front"seat passengers in the survey than rear"seat passengers were very severely injured.

The survey doesn't mention the same - Out of scope.

The survey is done - of the severely injured drivers and front"seat passengers

" Back seat passengers " is out of scope.

D. More than half of the drivers and front"seat passengers in the survey were not wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents.

True the passage tells - " 80 percent were not wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents. "

E. Most of the auto accidents reported to police in Dole County do not involve any serious injury.

False - " .....of all auto accident victims in Dole County found that, of the severely injured drivers and front"seat passengers....... "

So we have 2 answer choices -

(A) Of all the drivers and front"seat passengers in the survey, more than 20 percent were wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents.

This seems better than option (D)

(D) More than half of the drivers and front"seat passengers in the survey were not wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents. - This is explicitly stated in the passage , hence this can't be the assumption.

Hi amirhakimi,

This CR question is based on a small, yet very important, detail that you need to spot to get the correct answer.

We're told about a survey of ALL auto accident victims. Of the ones who were SEVERELY INJURED (drivers and front-seat passengers), 80% were NOT wearing seat belts. This data tells us that there were TWO types of victims: those who were severely injured AND those who were NOT severely injured.

The conclusion of the prompt (wearing seat belts can greatly reduce the risk of drivers and front-seat passengers getting injured) really has no evidence to back it up. One of the answers MUST provide that evidence. We're given data about people who DON'T wear seat belts. To prove the point, we need data about people who DO wear seat belts.

Since the prompt references ALL auto accident victims, we need to think about those who were NOT severely injured. For the author's conclusion to be true, we need to assume that those who were NOT severely injured were most likely wearing their seat belts. That makes answer A the logical missing piece of info.
