From the question, we know we have two possibilities for the value of x+2...it must be 4 or -4. This gives us two possible values of x
x+2 = 4
x=2
x+2 = -4
x=-6
Knowing these two possible values of x, move onto the statements to see if they allow us to determine the exact value.
Statement (1) tells us that x^2 is not equal to 4. Hence x is not equal to 2 or -2. Combining this with what we know from above, x must be -6.
Statement (2) tells us that x^2 = 36. This means that x is 6 or -6. Combining this with what we know from the question stem, x must be -6.
So, both statements on their own are sufficient to find x.
