Profile Evaluation Pls

by eki » Fri Feb 01, 2013 11:18 pm
Dear Experts,

My Background:
Indian Male, age 36.
Engineer from a regional Engineering College
PG in telecom management

Experience :
All 11 years in sales as Account Manager / Sales Manager in leading MNCs (Microsoft, Oracle etc.)
Have a successful career so far.Fast track growth in company. One of the youngest Regional sales managers, top gun award etc. Managed large accounts, competitive customer base, increased market share etc.

GMAT : 710 (Q 49 , V 39)

Extra carricular :

Nothing great. Usual stuff like quizzing, dramatics, leading college committees, work with NGO etc.

Acads : 78% in engineering. In top 10% of class in Post graduation.

International Exposure :

Been to 9 countries but never studied or worked there. All of them were short visits (sales planning, account meets, leisure etc). Worked with colleages from other countries.

Target Schools :
LBS, INSEAD.

Why MBA :
a) Move out of Sales b) Get into general management or strategy c) work outside India. If possible move out of IT companies.I know this is not comprehensive and not at all compelling.I am keen to get into finance, but with 11 years experience in sales, that too in IT companies, Finance will be a long shot.

I definitely do not want to do an Exec MBA, because I know an Exec MBA can never be compared with a full time MBA.

Please let me know my chances in getting into my target schools.

regards,
Eki

Well, 36 can be a bit of a challenge, sometimes. You are really scratching the upper edge of the age bracket of people that go to full-time MBA programs. I'm not saying it isnt possible, cause it is! But what it does mean is that the school you would likely end up getting accepted to is one that would be a bit lower ranked than a program you would have gotten in six years ago or an EMBA program.
Soo, as long as you accept that, I think there are plenty of wonderful schools you can get into.

I should also add that one of the primary objectives of your application will be to explain with very clear and good reasoning why you want a full-time MBA, why you want it NOW, why you waited so long, how it would help you at such a late stage in your career, etc. They won't know unless you tell them!

Hi,

Please go ahead with the list of shortlisted b-schools. The chances of selection in b-schools will depend on how well you position yourself in application essays and showcase headship qualities during final interviews. Also, talk about your professional achievements. You can try your chances in b-schools by clicking https://www.general-ed.com/chances-of-bschool

Feel free to post any other concerns you might have.

Best,
Yash

Thank you Jon.

I would do the MBA ONLY if I get into INSEAD/LBS or likes. I will never go for a lower rank school.Hence , please let me know what are my chances.

regards,
Eki

I know it's a rough evaluation, but basically I feel you would have a shot, but it would be tough. IF those are the only two schools you'd go for though, you'll just have to take your shot and see, right?
