Profile evaluation please.

by winnerma » Sat Nov 19, 2011 8:36 pm
Dear experts, can you please take a look at my profile and see if my goals are realists?

academic:
GMAT: 770 (Q51 - 98 V44 - 97) 99 taken today, first try
AWA: don't know yet
GPA: (pretty low, I actually do not have a converted GPA, my university does not use it)

Work:
3.5 years
Role: Senior engineer
At the begining of 2012, my company prompted and relocated me to USA to setup a new team here, however, I am not a manager but a technical expert
area: industry automation and manufacturing

Extra curricular activities:
engineers without boarders (student project, designed photovoltaic systems for less developed countries)

country of citizenship: Australia

Why MBA:
After working as an engineer for a few years, I think it is time for me to move on to a different role. I am looking into consulting as a future option, management and project consulting for manufacturing sector to be exact.

My targets:
Initially, I was going to apply BU or BC part time mba, however, after careful evaluation, since I am looking for a career change, I decided to go for a fulltime degree and studied extra hard on gmat. With a higher than expected gmat score, I want to try to apply
HBS, Sloan, Kellogg, Stern, Wharton also BU and BC fulltime.
Last but not least, is it too late to apply for 2012? Should I wait for 2013?

I really appericiate any inputs.

Best Regards

You have all the right components in your profile. It is always going to be competitive for the top business schools and a lot will depend on how well you execute your applications. You will have around 4.5 by matriculation, which is around the most common in the top schools. As far as your GPA is concerned, it is not going to change and it would be helpful if you have some extenuating factors that you could explain. Did you perform better during the later part of your undergrad? While your GMAT will offset the lower GPA to a certain extent, undergrad performance is still a factor in the admissions and a very low GPA will raise some concerns.

It seems you have sorted out your goals and have some good work experience as well (International, setting up a new team, etc). However, your extracurricular looks a little weak right now. Send us an email if you want to discuss your personal profile in more detail. However, there is still some time for R2 deadlines which are not up until the first two weeks of January and hence, if you want to apply, you definitely can.

Your chances of success, however, will depend on how well your address your gaps and how well you execute your application. Good luck!

Thanks bizschoolprep. I think I did perform a bit better towards the end of my undergraduate degree. There is nothing that I can do towards my GPA at this stage, I will have to write very convincing essays and execute my application a bit differently from most the applicants. I will start with the essay.

have another stupid question, given this is an MBA admission consultant section. How much difference does it make to get help from professional consultant? Will such help significantly improve my chance of getting into my dream school?
Thanks

Dude! 770! I think that extra hard studying paid off. To get a real feel of your profile, we'd nee a bit more info about your work, but the fact that you got sent to the States to set up a team is very promising (and probably will make a GREAT story).

So, you could apply this year if you are ready and if you got the time to SWEAT over the next six weeks, but if you do, you gotta start NOW.

also, given your profile, I'd look into Kellogg (maybe the MM program too), Tepper, Haas, and Anderson. They may be right up your line.

As for your follow up question: Weeeell, we believe it helps a LOT. It can totally transform an application. If we didn't, we wouldn't do it

Thanks for providing the advises Jon. I think I definitely have the time and sweat to work on the application at this stage. I will put my thoughts together today, hopefully, get something done tonight (work, experience etc.) and update here.

Best Regards
