noun is noun, a rule? please CLARIFY

by bettylll » Thu Aug 04, 2011 12:18 am
One legacy of Madison Avenue's recent campaign to appeal to people fifty years old and over
is the realization that as a person ages. their concerns change as well.
(A) the realization that as a person ages, their
(B) the realization that as people age, their
(C) to realize that when a person ages, his or her
(D) to realize that when people age, their
(E) realizing that as people age, their

OA:B

I just want to know here why it can't be "one legacy(noun)*** is to realize(noun) ***" while another Q below seems that it should be "noun ** is to **":

For the best extraction of the flavor of saffron threads, it should be soaked in liquid after being
pounded
with a mortar and pestle.

(A) For the best extraction of the flavor of saffron threads, it should be soaked in liquid after being
pounded
(B) To best extract their flavor, saffron threads should be soaked in liquid after pounding
(C) The best way to extract the flavor from saffron threads is soaking them in liquid after being
pounded
(D) The best way to extract the flavor from saffron threads is to soak them in liquid after pounding
them
(E) The flavor of saffron threads can best be extracted by soaking it in liquid after pounding it

OA:D

Thanks in advance

This SC depends on rules of parallelism . Legacy is a noun . is is a linking verb . Linking verbs need parallelism . So you need a noun on the other side of "is"Though i did think of C at first

(D) The best way to extract the flavor from saffron threads is to soak them in liquid after pounding
them
(E) The flavor of saffron threads can best be extracted by soaking it in liquid after pounding it
The key to this SC depends on the rule that an adverb is preferable to a prepositional phrase . (Given in MGMAT SC Guide )

hi bettylll, whats the source ? From where did you get this quest ?

In the second example, while not strictly parallel in their position, "to soak" finds a referent back at "to extract." If we took this out, it would no longer be an acceptable linkage:

"The best manner of extracting the flavor is to soak them" wrong
"The best manner of extracting the flavor is soaking them" right

I'm not entirely sure how to phrase this rule because, clearly, "way" (or "manner" in the above examples) is the subject so it should be the first part of the parallel structure. However, the principle that an infinite in this construction needs some other infinitive somewhere, at least, should hold up the validity of both questions, I hope.

If I think of a way to codify this rule, I'll be back to edit this post!

Yes, why "the way" can parallel with " to do"?

the problem here is that "the best way to do ... is to do.." is IDIOM which is listed at the back of PRINCETON VERBAL WORKBOOK. If I am remember correctly, No discussion more.
