Nile River

by vinay1983 » Sun Sep 08, 2013 9:31 pm
In early Egypt, the Nile inundated the banks every summer, prompting theories that the Sun had melted the snowfields that fed the river, although no one was certain where such snowfields were.

A) inundated the banks every summer, prompting theories that the Sun had melted the snowfields

B) had inundated the banks every summer, prompting theories that the Sun had melted the snowfields

C) had inundated the banks every summer, prompting theories that the Sun melted the snowfields

D) inundated the banks every summer, prompting theories that the Sun melted the snowfields

E) inundated the banks every summer and prompted theories that the Sun had melted the snowfields
You can, for example never foretell what any one man will do, but you can say with precision what an average number will be up to!

A) inundated the banks every summer, prompting theories that the Sun had melted the snowfields(Sun had melted" shows the theory was given before the Nile inundated the banks which is wrong as theory came after wards.)

B) had inundated the banks every summer, prompting theories that the Sun had melted the snowfields(there are two events here and both can't be stated with a "had", no requirement of "had" with the sun.)

C) had inundated the banks every summer, prompting theories that the Sun melted the snowfields(Correct as placement of "had" is correct and shows that theory came afterward).

D) inundated the banks every summer, prompting theories that the Sun melted the snowfields(It shows that the theory and Nile inundating the banks ,both happen together which is wrong, need a "had" in first event).

E) inundated the banks every summer and prompted theories that the Sun had melted the snowfields(Needs a present progressive tense for prompting of theory)

Ans is C ,please share the OA and the Source.

Hello Manpreet,

Isn't it that we need to consider that the melting of snowfields has happened before the inundation of the river has happened. So the usage of "had" before the melting of snow field to be correct.

Please clarify.

Vishnu.

I don't agree with C and think it's E.

I think Answer should be A Dude.
whats the source.
The sentence says that the nile inundated the banks every summer...which in turn promoted theories so ing form is correct....again Sun had melted the snowfields before snowfield fed the river so we need "had".

correct me if I am sure but I think A is correct answer.
