OG 11?!

by DanaJ » Mon Feb 02, 2009 1:55 am
OMG guys my OG just arrived... And it's freakin huge! Why didn't anyone tell me this book was as big as three dictionaries?! It's gonna take a lot of work... Are the other two books (quant and verbal OG's) as thick?

It´s really not that big, since most of it is explanations for the problems in the guide. I find that writing a solution takes way longer than thinking it =)

It is not as big as it looks (I mean it is big in the physical sense but not in the material to be covered sense). There are about 250 problems in the problem solving section, which took me around 2 hours to cover, so depending on how comfortable you are with a section it would take from about 2 hrs to a week (the time it took for me to cover the verbal section).

How far away is your GMAT anyway??

Probably sometime in late April, but I've got a ton of other things to do... Like learn Portuguese and help my little brother with his exams... And I'm also working full time until the end of Feb, so... :-<

Better to start with Manhattan or Kaplan, before going to OG.. OG is good for problem sets , but not great for theory.. Manhattan and Kaplan are good to understand the basics, based on which you can then go solving OG problems. The entire OG book is mostly questions and explanations and thats why it looks huge, else it is not much.. all the best

Thank you for your suggestions, but fortunately I don't need to go over the basics.... They're still fresh in my head....

That is good that your basics are fresh , in that case you fill find most of the problems in OG quite easy, and you will pass half of the book just like that, there are few that are somewhat tough.

Then you shouldnt take a lot of time to go through OG, like I said if you spend like 2 hrs per day you should be able to do it in a weeks time, which still leaves plenty of time for you to the other prep books.

Cheers.

i must object to the content of the preceding two posts, which basically seem to say that the OP should rush through the official guide as quickly as possible, just solving problem after problem after problem.

this is not the way to study, especially for quant. you've got to remember that, during study, solving problems is not the point. because you're not going to see those problems again, they're only valuable inasmuch as they let you derive takeaways that you can then apply to other problems on the test.

see this post for the general idea:
https://www.beatthegmat.com/depressed-th ... html#62498
that post also contains numerous other study hints, too, but you should especially concentrate on the part about takeaways.

for a more concrete example of what i mean, check out the following thread. it's a bit extreme - i derived 5 different takeaways from the same problem - but you'll get the point. notice that all of the takeaways are general lessons, which could then be turned around and applied to other problems.

in any case, if you're studying problems COMPLETELY - which means (a) deriving takeaways, (b) taking inventory of any strategies you used and/or mistakes you made, AND (c) briefly considering other approaches to the problem, then it should take you at least a month or two to get through the official guide (depending on the level you're currently at). if you're getting through the entire OG in a week, then either you're a genius or you're not penetrating thoroughly enough into the analysis of the problems.
